Summary:

Josh Martin, lead pastor of Grace Church in San Diego, joined us in chapel and challenged shepherds to not retreat but to be deeply involved in the lives of their flock. "I've read a lot of leadership books. So have you. Many Christian leadership books. And they will tell you how to cast vision, how to create strategy, how to lead meetings, how to manage a team, how to do your time efficiently, all of which are good and necessary things but none of them will say, step one to being a godly ministry leader is learn to weep with people. Can you imaging meeting with your supervisor and pulling out your metrics and being like, "So, lets hear it, how many people did you weep with this week?" Can you imagine putting that on your KPI's, your OKRs, your vision frame? Can you imaging going before the church and being like, we have grand vision for this year. We would like to see 20% more weeping. No, it's not normal. We got to get this vision. Don't graduate this wonderful seminary with a strong theology but numb emotions. Don't you dare. Our savior wept at graves. He was a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. The Son of God was not emotionally distant from our pain. Therefore, his shepherds should not be emotionally distant. We need to feel the emotions."
