Josh Mathews
Associate Dean for Educational Effectiveness | Professor of Old Testament Studiesjoshmathews@gs.eduDr. Joshua G. Mathews joined the faculty at Gateway Seminary in 2025, serving as professor of Old Testament studies and as associate dean for educational effectiveness. He received his PhD from Gateway (then Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary) in 2011 and served in a pastoral role initially upon finishing doctoral studies. Starting in 2015 he had been on faculty at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon and was the dean and vice president of academics there for four years prior to coming to Gateway.
The aim of Josh’s vocational pursuits is biblical and theological scholarship for the church. Whether in teaching, research and writing, or administration his desire is to help strengthen God’s people in his word for his glory. While his interests vary broadly, particular areas of study include biblical theology, the Pentateuch, and hermeneutics. He has written on these topics and hopes to continue contributing in ways that serve the seminary and the church. He is also an elder at his church and loves investing in that role as a shepherd of the local body of believers.
Josh is a native of the Pacific Northwest, and Gateway’s Northwest campus will be his home base. He and his wife, Stacy, have four children: two girls and two boys. They enjoy all kinds of activities together as a family, from games and backyard barbecues to camping on Mt. Hood and hiking in the Columbia River Gorge.
