Associate Pastor
Tidewater Korean Baptist Church is a Korean immigrant church undergoing transition and seeking to navigate through the next steps towards becoming a healthy immigrant church. We are seeking to hire an Associate Pastor who will assist the Senior Pastor in all general pastoral duties while providing oversight of our NextGen ministries and execute church administrative duties. Given our ministry context, the candidate must be aware of the unique cultural dynamic within the immigrant church and be willing to faithfully pastor members of diverse backgrounds and languages.
I. Qualifications:
1. Biblical qualifications of a pastor/elder/overseer (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9)
2. Agree to church’s Statement of Faith (currently Baptist Faith & Message 2000)
3. Must be fluent in English and show basic proficiency in Korean. Cultural fluency in both preferred.
II. Areas of Responsibility:
1. Assist Senior Pastor: Assist the pastor in all facets in the shepherding of God’s flock with all diligence knowing one day an account will be given to God for those under pastoral care (Hebrews 13:17). He is to assist in leading the members of Tidewater Korean Baptist Church in the fulfillment of the commission given in Matthew 28:19-20 to evangelize and disciple.
2. Elder: Serve as an elder (meeting the qualifications addressed in 1 Timothy and Titus). Oversee matters of membership (including admittance and discipline) and ensure only doctrine fitting to a New Testament church is taught.
3. Pastoral Care: Work with the elders and members of Tidewater Korean Baptist Church to disciple, encourage, and admonish church members in one-on-one or small group settings. This will include activities such as pre-marital counseling, counseling of members in crisis, ongoing discipling of church members, and church member visitation.
4. Preaching and Teaching: Preach the word of God for the edification of the church approximately 6-12 times annually on the Lord’s Day, depending on circumstances. Teach regularly for Early Morning Prayer, (Youth) Sunday School, 101 (Membership), small-group Bible studies, etc. Lead services when the church gathers for worship and business as needed.
5. NextGen (Nursery-Young Adult): Provide oversight of all NextGen ministry activities. Alongside Senior Pastor, mobilize, train, and disciple volunteer teachers, coordinators, and parents. Youth: Plan and lead bi-weekly Friday Bible study and fellowship
6. Administration: Maintain membership roster. Prepare weekly bulletin. Keep up to date with state inspections of the church building.
7. Other:
a. Attend all regular meetings of a member (Sunday School, Lord’s Day gathering, Missional Cell Group, Prayer Meetings (Early Morning Prayer, Friday Night), Member’s Meeting)
b. Participate in staff meetings and plan and execute weekly worship services and special services (Baptisms, Lord’s Supper, Weddings, Funerals, etc.)
III. Working Conditions & Compensation
1. Office: Designated desk space in an open office. Equipment purchased by need and request
2. Hours: 40 hours a week (Full-time) with office hours negotiated with the Senior Pastor
3. Holidays & Vacation: 1st year – National holidays + 7 vacation days (increases to 14 vacation days Year 2)
4. Compensation: Starting $50,000 (Salary and Housing Allowance) and commensurate on family size & experience
