The senior pastor job involves leading, preaching, teaching, and shepherding the congregation, focusing on biblical truth, evangelism, and discipleship, while also overseeing worship, providing pastoral care (counseling, hospital visits, weddings/funerals), guiding church vision, managing staff/volunteers, and engaging in community outreach, all aligned with the Baptist Faith and Message and denominational practices. Key duties include sermon preparation, leading ordinances (baptism, communion), fostering unity, and ensuring spiritual growth, requiring strong biblical knowledge, leadership, delegating, and communication skills in accordance with 1 Timothy 3:1-7.
Core Responsibilities
Preaching & Teaching: Delivering biblically sound, expository messages; leading Bible studies; training members in doctrine.
Worship Leadership: Planning and leading worship services, administering ordinances (Baptism, Lord's Supper).
Pastoral Care: Shepherding the flock through counseling, visiting in the home/hospital, and providing comfort in crises.
Vision & Leadership: Setting direction (with cooperation and guidance) from deacons, staff, and membership), equipping leaders, fostering spiritual maturity, and coordinating ministries.
Evangelism & Outreach: Leading efforts to reach the community and world with the Gospel, integrating outreach into church life.
Administration: Working with deacons and staff, overseeing church programs, and ensuring sound church governance.
Key Qualifications & Skills
Spiritual: A deep, demonstrable faith, strong prayer life, adherence to biblical standards (1 Timothy 3:1-7, 1 Peter 5:1-4).
Doctrinal: Alignment with the Southern Baptist Convention's beliefs (Baptist Faith & Message).
Leadership: Ability to build teams, manage staff, resolve conflict, and inspire spiritual growth.
Communication: Excellent preaching, teaching, and interpersonal skills to connect across generations.
Education: Preferably a seminary degree, but willing to visit with anyone truly called to the ministry who fulfils God's calling.
Typical Duties
Preparing for and leading weekly services
Conducting weddings and funerals.
Visiting hospitalized, grieving, and members at home.
Overseeing discipleship programs and curriculum.
Collaborating with church officers and committees.
