Master of Missiological Essentials

The Master of Missiological Essentials (MME) will equip you engage people with the gospel in cross-cultural contexts. The MME includes the theological education requirements for those serving full-time with the International Mission Board plus additional missiology and core courses.

The MME is a 36 credit-hour degree focused on core theological fields.

These courses exceed the IMB’s requirements for full-time missionaries. Develop a foundation in biblical studies and theology along with deep training in critical skills for the mission field, including a short-term mission trip practicum in an international setting. Beyond Trips are fully-funded mission trips supported by the Go Grant.

Why a Master of Missiological Essentials

The MME satisfies the theological education requirements for IMB missionaries and supplements your education with additional courses to help you serve well in an international context. It is designed for students with a call to missions who have already earned a bachelor’s degree that may be used overseas, such as nursing, business, education, etc.

The MME will enable students to:

  • Exhibit an introductory graduate-level understanding of the Bible’s content, contexts, structure, and message; and demonstrate the ability to conduct solid research with a goal of properly applying the Bible to modern life.
  • Affirm God’s calling and explore areas of spiritual formation and ministerial practice appropriate for ministry leadership.
  • Understand worldviews, cultures, and the challenge of contextualizing the gospel in domestic and international contexts.
  • Understand theory and develop practical skills and proficient strategy to be effective in communicating and living the gospel in ecclesiological, missional, theological, and intercultural contexts.
    • Develop deeper awareness and skills for professional roles in church, society, and inter/cross-cultural contexts.

Gateway Seminary will consider applicants lacking an accredited undergraduate degree for admission to its basic master’s degrees. A student must request admission under this provision in writing through the Office of Enrollment and may initiate this request only after all qualifying criteria have been met:

  • Applicants must demonstrate their ability to do graduate-level work by entering the Seminary as a diploma student and by completing at least 15 hours of Gateway Seminary coursework required in the master’s degree sought (at least 6 hours of introductory courses in New Testament, Old Testament, history, or theology) with a minimum GPA of 3.2. Electives, transfer credits and ADVANCE courses may not be used to satisfy this requirement.
  • This provision will not be granted to previous students who graduated with diploma degrees.
