Position Summary: This position provides strategic and administrative leadership for the academic programs of the Seminary and serves as Academic Dean.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: The following duties are considered essential to the job. With or without reasonable accommodation, qualified individuals must have the ability to:
  • Lead in developing the philosophy, objectives, and operating policies and procedures of the total academic program to implement and contribute to the mission of the seminary.
  • Lead in recruiting teaching personnel (including adjunct, affiliated, and guest professors) and make recommendations to the President regarding the appointment, election, promotion, dismissal, and retirement of teaching personnel.
  • Administer seminary policies relating to teaching personnel, including sabbatical leaves, assignment of teaching responsibilities, and approval of other teaching responsibilities or remunerative positions outside the Seminary.
  • Represent the faculty to the administration and the administration to the faculty.
  • Direct academic planning, including curriculum design and scheduling.
  • Provide Academic Services leadership by serving on the President’s Cabinet, as chairman of the Academic Council, and as an ex-officio member of all Faculty committees; attends meetings of the Board of Trustees and as the staff liaison to the Academic Services Committee of the Board.
  • Provide administrative oversight for all matters (budget, reporting and personnel related to Academic Services), and coordinate all academic delivery locations and delivery systems.
  • Fulfill appropriate teaching and writing responsibilities, and serving as academic liaison with other institutions and accrediting agencies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the President.

Job duties are not limited to the list shown above and may be revised from time to time as deemed appropriate by the Seminary.

  3. Sufficient academic publications to demonstrate commitment to scholarship.

  5. Adequate emotional and spiritual maturity for working in a complex environment.
  6. Capable of working in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment in the western United States.
  7. Capable of articulating an educational philosophy appropriate to graduate theological education and consistent with the mission of the seminary
  8. Committed to educational approaches for adult learners using varied educational modalities with a balanced curriculum of foundational and vocational courses.
  9. Familiar with graduate accreditation standards, expectations, and processes.
  10. Personal spiritual commitments reflected in devotional practices, financial stewardship, marriage/family health, church participation, and missional living.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manages subordinate employees and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Seminary's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, have a strong commitment to the mission of Gateway Seminary, and be an active member of a Southern Baptist Church. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Skills Education and/or Experience: PhD in a theological related field. Significant experience and demonstrated success in higher education administration at the department level or higher with experience in curriculum development, accreditation, program review, and outcomes assessment, development and implementation of innovative academic programs, and budget management.

Language Skills: Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner. Ability to read and interpret academic documents such as customer guidelines and procedures information. Ability to speak effectively before constituents or employees. Ability to communicate effectively and specifically to address problems with management. Ability to lead and influence people or groups of people toward the achievement of goals.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform advanced quantitative analysis and calculate key financial ratios. Able to read and assess published financial statements.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and regulations/laws furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form pertaining to the industry. Strong negotiation skills.

Computer Skills: Knowledge of the Microsoft office suite (Microsoft Access Database; Microsoft Outlook; Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word); must have an aptitude for learning and working with computer applications (Jenzabar).

Other Skills and Abilities: Must be available for travel 5 – 10% of the time.
