Summary: This position is responsible for the day-to-day circulation of collections, providing paraprofessional duties in the following areas:  reference services, circulation services, collection development, budget management, and technical circulation supervision of part time Reference Assistants.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: The following duties are considered essential to the job. With or without reasonable accommodation, qualified individuals must have the ability to:
    • Provide reference responsibilities by instructing patrons (students, faculty, and community members) in finding, retrieving, evaluating, and using theological research tools and resources available both locally and online; developing cooperatively with library staff regular orientations and training for patrons on how to use the library and resources
    • Promote the use of library materials and instruct students in the use of the library catalog; and, solicit student and faculty perceptions and needs via surveys and other viable methods.
    • Provide collection development responsibilities by actively participating in collection analysis and development through working with Interlibrary Loan, Intercampus Loan, and serials, with the Collection Librarian, and oversee physical processing of library materials.
    • Provide support through responsibility of preservation of the serials collection and oversee maintenance of the serials collection including checking in, shelving, collapsing, and preservation in conjunction with the Collection Librarian.
    • Provide circulation support by developing, coordinating and managing all circulation aspects of the library collection for Gateway Seminary Library System in conjunction with the Public Services Librarian, correspond with patrons regarding overdue/lost library materials and library notices, and collect and deposit fines and fees.
    • Support the library by developing, implementing and revising system circulation policies in cooperation with the Public Services Librarian, write and maintain updated system circulation manuals, including detailed operating procedures for Reserve, Charge/Discharge, Searching, Creating/Editing Patron records, and ICL.
    • Oversee management, troubleshooting, and all customer service aspects of Intercampus Loan services for all Gateway Seminary campuses.
    • Provide strong customer service, including customer complaints, special requests, and occasional customer service situations with library patrons from Gateway Seminary Regional campuses.
    • Evaluate material donations to determine value to collection and maintain donor relations in conjunction with the Collection Librarian.
    • Work with the Regional Librarians and Collection Librarian to maintain reserve book collections.
    • Coordinate and supervise the Gateway Seminary Library ATLA duplicate exchange program.
    • Provide facility support by coordinating copier equipment, maintenance, and product ordering procedures; schedule and maintain Gateway Seminary Library conference/meeting rooms; and assign, maintain, and inspect individual study carrels and PhD study rooms.
    • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree in a related subject area such as theology, religion or library science preferred; Prior library or related experience required; A working knowledge of theological reference tools including use of traditional print and online resources preferred.

Language Skills: English Required. Candidate must possess excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills. Candidate must have strong people skills with the ability to clearly communicate the mission, policies, and procedures of the Seminary.  Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, students, and constituents.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; Must be able to think creatively to address library patrons’ questions.

Computer Skills: Knowledge of computers and databases; Proficient in Microsoft Office, including knowledge of Access and Publisher required; Experience with OCLC WorldShare Circulation module preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand, kneel, crouch, climb and balance, walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee should be capable of lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision requirements for this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, though moderate noise can occur at meetings and social events.  It is a well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation.
