Discipleship Pastor: Spiritual Growth and Connecting Generations

Position Description for the Discipleship Pastor:

First Baptist Church Boerne is a gospel-centered multi-generational church family who highly values Growth Groups and living our lives on mission for Jesus Christ. In the continuous labor of nurturing our stated identity into reality for all members, the primary focus of the Discipleship Pastor will be on spiritual growth and connecting generations. As to spiritual growth, the Discipleship Pastor will possess a passion, vision, and strategy to see every individual and family in FBC Boerne grow in their relationship with and service to Christ and others. As to connecting generations, the Discipleship Pastor will provide leadership and oversight to drive the development of all adult and family discipleship ministries to reflect the multigenerational vision/identity of FBC Boerne.

The Discipleship Pastor reports to the Senior Pastor and will be appraised by him. This person will be employed by the church on a full time, exempt, salaried basis via an employment contract that specifies salary and benefits. The normal work schedule for this individual will be Sunday to Thursday, although there is need for attendance at some church meetings held in the evenings and weekend days. This position will have a defined delegation of spending authority as determined by the Church Council. Hiring and termination decisions will be made per the church’s Hiring, Termination, and Discipline Policy.

The Discipleship Pastor will facilitate collaboration and decision-making by encouraging a diversity of perspectives that fall within the church’s biblically based foundational beliefs.

Qualifications for this position:
• Expressed personal faith in Jesus Christ.
• Personal integrity and a blameless reputation.
• Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in biblical and theological studies. An emphasis in discipleship is preferable.
• Demonstrated leadership and administrative skills in a supervisory position.
• Relevant work experience in a church.
• Ordained and in agreement with the FBC Boerne statement of faith. Able to perform ministerial duties as needed, including preaching, baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

I. Maintain a lifestyle of blamelessness as described in the Lifestyle Covenant in the FBC Boerne Structure Document.

II. Establish and oversee a pathway of individual discipleship from the moment of church membership through ongoing and evident spiritual growth. This will include:
a. Craft and oversee a pathway to guide individuals and families in their next steps of spiritual growth
b. Establish and implement an assessment process to trace how individual members are progressing on the discipleship pathway
c. Develop and deploy a strategy for identification and engagement of spiritual gifts
d. Provide staff leadership in ministries of benevolence, counseling, and covenant member care as a part of a wholistic discipleship strategy for members and their families

III. Evaluate, develop, implement, and oversee structures, venues, and programs that facilitate individual, family, and multi-generational discipleship. This will include:
a. Communicate a clear and compelling message and strategy for connecting generations as a living component of spiritual growth for individuals and families
b. Oversee Growth Groups and all other adult discipleship ministries, leading them to both facilitate individual discipleship and integrate multi-generational rhythms towards embodying the identity of the church
c. Develop and implement strategies for effective identification, training, and mentoring of discipleship ministry leaders and teachers
d. Collaborate with children and student ministry leaders to engender pathways of multigenerational family discipleship
e. Collaborate with local and international mission teams to engender active individual and family participation in missions

IV. Lead and manage the people and processes associated with the discipleship ministry.
a. Manage the budget of the discipleship ministry, including participation in the annual church budgeting process, in accordance with the goals of the ministry and the financial policies of the church
b. Lead the staff and volunteers designated to the discipleship ministry, inclusive of children and student ministries, in the areas of recruitment, onboarding, periodic and annual appraisal, mentoring, and training in accordance with their respective responsibilities and potential
